Why Navy & White

This is the Hokusai Great Wave palette, and the historical reference is exact down to the pigment. Around 1831, the woodblock printer Katsushika Hokusai cut the first state of Under the Wave off Kanagawa, the most reproduced piece of Japanese art in human history. The original print survives in major museum collections from the British Museum to the Met to the National Diet Library in Tokyo, and it works in only two real colors. A specific deep blue called bero-ai in Japanese (a synthetic Berlin blue, what English-speaking chemists call Prussian blue) carries the entire wave body and the fishing boats inside it. White paper carries the foam at the wave crest, the spray flying off the curl, and Mount Fuji in the background.

How Full-Dye Sublimation Works

1. Your artwork gets mirror-printed on transfer paper using sublimation ink.

2. The transfer paper meets the polyester jersey panel inside a heat press at roughly 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Heat turns the ink directly into gas, skipping liquid entirely.

4. The gas bonds permanently into the polyester fibers, becoming part of the fabric structure.

5. Panels are then cut and sewn into the finished jersey, so the print continues across every seam.

The result is a jersey where the design cannot crack, peel, fade, or wash out, because there is no separate ink layer on top of the fabric to fail. The color and the polyester are the same physical material.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fluid different from splash, splatter, and lightning patterns?

Fluid is the calmest of the four motion patterns. Splash is concentrated impact (one event frozen). Splatter is chaotic dispersion (many small flung paint marks). Lightning is sharp electric strike with branching geometry. Fluid is none of those. It reads as continuous flow, slow undulation, smooth curve work, the kind of liquid motion you would see in a long-exposure photograph rather than a high-shutter-speed action shot. It is the pattern most teams choose when they want movement on the kit without visual noise.

Will the curves match up across the side seams?

Yes. The pattern is calibrated so the dominant flow direction continues from the front panel into the side panel, around the back, and through the sleeve cap. Side-seam curve continuity is one of the things our pre-press team specifically checks during mockup approval. Some interruption is unavoidable at the under-arm seam (where the fabric curves sharply), but the broader visual flow reads as one connected surface from twenty feet away.

Is navy here closer to royal blue, midnight, or pure navy?

Closest to a true Pantone Navy 19-3939, with a touch of cooler depth that pulls slightly toward the Prussian blue used in 19th-century Japanese woodblock printing. Royal blue reads brighter and more electric. Midnight blue reads darker and pulls toward black. If your school or club brand book specifies an exact Pantone, we can adjust to PMS 282, 281, or 19-3939.

Will the white passages show grass and sand stains?

White is part of the sublimated print, not separate panels of white fabric. The print itself does not absorb stains the way screen-print or vinyl logos would. Most of the kit is navy base color, which hides minor scuffs better than a white-dominant body would. Beach players should expect normal cold-wash maintenance, the same as any white-paneled apparel.

Is this a good kit for a fan jersey of teams that wear navy and white?

Does the pattern depict the actual Hokusai Great Wave or Mount Fuji?

No. The pattern uses the visual logic and color story that Hokusai used in 1831 (flowing wave curves, navy body, white foam crests, two-color economy) but does not reproduce the original woodblock composition, the specific wave geometry, the fishing boats, or the silhouette of Mount Fuji. Hokusai's original print is in the public domain, but our pattern is original Hayxo artwork inspired by the period rather than copied from it.

Can the libero wear a contrasting kit in a related palette?

Yes. The libero rule requires a clearly contrasting jersey from the rest of the roster. We commonly run the libero in a flipped palette where white becomes the dominant body and navy becomes the wave-crest highlight, or we shift the libero to a brighter Prussian-blue base with the same white curve work. Same fluid pattern, same fabric, fully compliant with USAV and FIVB libero contrast rules.

Will the fluid pattern look pixelated or blurry up close?

No. We print at 300 DPI on the transfer side and the polyester knit absorbs the ink at fiber level. The smooth curve transitions hold without banding, and the white highlight edges stay crisp at arm's length. There is no halftone or screen pattern visible up close.

Is this jersey legal for high school competition?

Yes, it meets NFHS uniform requirements for body color, number contrast, and jersey-libero rules. Number height (six inch front, eight inch back) and color contrast are configured at the mockup stage so you do not have to verify against the rule book yourself.

Do you offer this same fluid pattern in other palettes?

How does Hayxo handle artwork I do not own?

We only print artwork you own or are licensed to use. Pro team logos, college trademarks, and copyrighted character art cannot be reproduced. Original team marks, school crests with district approval, and your own custom designs are all welcome and shipped without licensing concerns.
